Hydrotherapy

Water-based rehabilitation that uses the properties of warm water to support gentle, effective recovery and movement restoration.

Hydrotherapy is a form of physiotherapy conducted in a warm water environment, using the natural properties of water — buoyancy, resistance, and hydrostatic pressure — to support rehabilitation. At The Health Phyx, our physiotherapists design individualised hydrotherapy programmes for clients who may benefit from a low-impact approach to exercise and recovery.

The buoyancy of water reduces the load on joints and tissues, making it easier to perform movements that may be difficult or painful on land. This makes hydrotherapy particularly useful in the early stages of rehabilitation following surgery, for people managing arthritis or chronic pain, and for those who find land-based exercise challenging due to pain or limited mobility.

Our hydrotherapy sessions are conducted at partner facilities on the Gold Coast, with programmes designed and supervised by our AHPRA-registered physiotherapists. Each session is tailored to your specific condition and goals, and may include walking, gentle strengthening exercises, stretching, and balance activities — all performed in the warm water environment.

Hydrotherapy may be used as a standalone treatment or as part of a broader rehabilitation programme. Many clients transition between hydrotherapy and land-based physiotherapy as their condition improves, gradually increasing the demands on their body as healing progresses. This graduated approach aims to provide a smooth pathway from early recovery through to full function.

We commonly recommend hydrotherapy for post-operative rehabilitation, chronic pain management, osteoarthritis, neurological conditions, and for NDIS participants who benefit from water-based exercise. Your physiotherapist will assess whether hydrotherapy is appropriate for your specific situation.
